Top 10 Google chrome Extensions

Top 10 Google chrome Extensions

The Google Chrome Extensions Gallery was launched less than a week ago and it's starting to look like things are going smoothly. It had 300 extensions when it debuted and now has more than 600 extensions. What's more, the most popular extension, Google Mail Checker, is now closing in on 200,000 downloads and has more than 1,000 reviews, not too bad for just a few days. So, without further ado, here are the top ten most popular extensions so far.

10. AdBlock. Unsurprisingly, a couple of the most popular extensions are ad blockers, by far one of the most appreciated type of add-ons for Firefox. AdBlock, despite sharing the name with a great Firefox add-on, doesn't seem to have any connection to it. It does what it's supposed to do, blocks ads, and the developers say it handles Facebook ads, as well as Flash animations. It has a “blacklist” and a “whitelist” feature, both of which are still in beta and allow users to select the blocked items with a couple of keyboard shortcuts.

9. Cooliris. (screenshot below) This is the Google Chrome version of the popular desktop application with the same name. It offers an interesting alternative to viewing photos by using a gorgeous 3D interface, which the developers claim is the fastest way to browse through photos on Facebook, Picasa or even on your desktop but also through image search results on Google, Flickr and others. Unfortunately, this extension is Windows-only for the moment though Cooliris states other OSes will be supported soon with a Mac extension apparently in the works.

8. Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer. (screenshot below) Built by Google, this extension is a great tool that should save you a lot of hassle and the trouble of having to install, sometimes huge, applications just to view a PDF file. With it, any link to a PDF or PowerPoint file opens up in a new tab in the lightweight but very capable Google Docs Viewer. No more unwieldy plug-in or external programs, people who want to keep it nice and clean will love this one.

7. Xmarks Bookmark Sync. The popular bookmarks synchronization add-on for Firefox, formerly known as Foxmarks, makes it to Google Chrome. It is already available for Safari and Internet Explorer and for users who want to take their bookmarks anywhere they go and, more importantly, to any browser they want, there's no replacing it.

6. IE Tab. (screenshot below) A rather self-explanatory extension, it allows users to open a new tab in Chrome using the Internet Explorer rendering engine. This comes in handy for older sites that don't support other browsers, not that there are that many of those around, or which may not render well in Chrome. It's also useful for web developers wanting to test their work in IE.

Microsoft to spend $80-100 million to promote its search engine Bing

Microsoft to spend $80-100 million to promote its search engine Bing

Microsoft plans to spend $80 million to $100 million on a campaign to promote its new search engine, Bing. The software giant has roped in JWT to execute the campaign which will include online, TV, print and radio.

The Bing ads are expected to focus not on Google or Yahoo but on planting the idea that today's search engines don't work as well as consumers previously thought by asking them whether search (read Google) really solves their problems.

Interestingly, Google has conducted internal tests in which the company put its logo and treatment on another engine's search results. Users still prefer the results with the Google logo, even if they are not Google results!

"We will soon be launching IE8 in 20 additional languages including 11 Indian regional languages, specifically, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu," Rajiv Popli, director, Windows Client Business Group, Microsoft, has said. Bing > Here is what the industry feels about the new 'decision engine' from Microsoft

Bing > Here is what the industry feels about the new 'decision engine' from Microsoft

02 June, 2009
by Babita Ram

Following the launch of Microsoft's new search engine, oops 'decision engine' Bing.com, We got in touch with some of the key people of the Indian online industry to know their first impressions about the new service. Looks like Bing.com has already impressed many, if not all.

Deep Kalra, founder and CEO, MakeMyTrip.com, said, "I am impressed. Good quality results both for business and news. The preview feature (on the right) is impressive and I also liked the filters and features on images. Success will depend on quality of results."

When asked if MakeMyTrip will add Bing to its media plan, Deep Kalra said that the company would be watching Bing carefully and would like to experiment with it.

Vivek Bhargava, managing director, Communicate2, said, "Bingo! The interface is refreshing. Features like running videos from the result pages itself are fantastic. In India we are unable to see the full power of Bing shopping and travel -- however the demo of these services is surely impressive. The positioning is impressive too -- decision engine."

"Having said that, I don't think we are ready to switch from the other search engine though I think Microsoft has got the direction right," added Bhargava.

Hitesh Oberoi, COO and director, Info Edge India (Naukri.com), said, "At first glance the Bing user experience is refreshing. It is fast, good looking, clutter free and comes with smart features like dynamic clusters on the Left Hand Side panel. The video play on mouseover feature is also useful. There is also a better integration of news results which seem to be frequently updated."

"This seems to be a serious attempt by Microsoft to challenge Google's dominance in search. Finally with Yahoo Glue and Microsoft Bing the search market is set to become a little more competitive for sure," added Oberoi.

Commenting on Info Edge's plans to advertise on Bing, Hitesh Oberoi said, "We have been advertising on MSN and Live Search and will continue to advertise on Bing as well for sure."

Murugavel Janakiraman, founder and CEO, Consim Info (BharatMatrimony.com), said, "The on-mouseover on the search results which displays the latest or first few lines of content from the web page as a preview of the site's content is impressive. Related search items on the left side are also quite useful."

"Besides, different viewing options to zoom in or out on images in the image search and the various filters available in the image search are nice features. In video searches, the filters and display options work even better," Janakiraman added. According to him, the user interface and overall user experience is impressive and the product is a good deviant from the standard, boring search engine interfaces.

But as we mentioned in the intro, not all are as impressed with Microsoft's latest offering. "I spent around an hour searching on Bing and my first feeling as a customer is that I did not like the look and feel, the style and the colour of the product," L D Sharma, managing director, Shoogloo Online Marketing, said.

"Search engines are known to be simpler and simpler. Also, I have been shown some good things about Bing.com and some not so good results. However, this is totally my personal feeling as a search engine marketer for the last five years," L D Sharma added.

What are Reciprocal Links and What do Search Engines Think of Them?

What are Reciprocal Links and What do Search Engines Think of Them?

When web sites link to each other, either directly or indirectly through a number of different pages, a search engine might consider those links to be reciprocal links. If you're familiar with some of the mythology and folklore surrounding search engine optimization, you may have read or heard that reciprocal links are bad, and that search engines don't like them.

The truth is more complicated than that.

What about blogs that link to each other on every page in their blog rolls? Or links between sites owned by the same owner that are reasonable, such as a storefront on a different domain, or a blog at a different domain or subdomain associated with a site, or a group of sites from the same company or organization that focus upon different topics?

What about sites that cover similar topics or provide complementary goods or services and find that it's helpful to link to each other for the benefit of their visitors?

What do search engines think of resource pages, where sites include pages of links and descriptions to other sites that they think their visitors might find helpful and useful? What happens if some of those sites link back? Does it make a difference if those resource pages include a statement on them that they will list your site on their page in exchange for a reciprocal link back?

Search Engine Warnings on Links Between Pages

The major commercial search engines do provide some information about linking in their guidelines:

Google's page on Link Schemes warns site owners that some kinds of linking might impact the ratings of their web sites negatively, including:

  • Links intended to manipulate PageRank
  • Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web
  • Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging ("Link to me and I'll link to you.")
  • Buying or selling links that pass PageRank

Yahoo, in their Search Content Quality Guidelines, provides examples of content that they don't want included in their search engine, such as:

  • Sites cross-linked excessively with other sites to inflate a site's apparent popularity (link schemes)

Windows Live Help, in their page on Guidelines for successful indexing, include amongst their list of "techniques that might prevent your website from appearing in Live Search results," the following:

  • Using techniques, such as link farms, to artificially increase the number of links to your webpage.

How helpful are these guidelines to most searchers or webmasters or bloggers?

Chances are that some percentage of the people who use Google, or have their websites indexed by the search engine are familiar with PageRank, but may not know what these guidelines mean by "link schemes" or "link farms".

Why are search engines so concerned about links between pages?

Classifications for Search Ranking Signals

When you perform a search at a search engine, the pages that show up in response to your search appear are ranked and ordered by the search engine based upon a large number of signals used by the search engine to try to provide you with pages that might best match up with what you intended to find on the Web.

That kind of ranking is a challenge for search engines because there can often be many thousands or millions of pages that might contain the words that you used to perform your search. They want to try to provide the best pages that they can at the top of the results, or at least better pages than the other search engines are showing.

These different signals that a search engine might used to determine the order of pages in search results could be classified a few different ways.

Content Based, Link Based, and User Behavior Based Ranking Signals

One set of classifications consists of breaking those signals into three different types: content based, link based, and user behavior based.

Content based signals look at the actual content that appears upon the pages of a web site. Link based signals pay attention to the links between your site and other sites on the web. User based signals look at data that indicates how people might react to the pages of your site, whether they are viewing the site directly, or seeing it in search results at a search engine.

Query Dependant and Query Independant Ranking Signals

Another way that search engines might classify the signals that they use to rank pages can depend upon whether or not that signal is related to a query that you might use to search with or not. This way of classifying those signals breaks them down into two different groupings - how important they might consider a page to be, and how relevant a page might be to a specific search term or phrase.

Signals that look at the importance, or "quality" of a page might look at the quality of the content of a page, or the number and perceived importance of links to that page, or how people use the page such as bookmarking it, spending time on it, annotating it in some way, or using it in some manner that might not be tied to a specific query. These kinds of signals for ranking a page are often referred to by search engines as query independant signals, because they don't rely upon a query that might have been used to find that page.

Signals that look at the relevance of a page might look at how relevant that page might be to a specific query term or phrase, what words might appear in links pointing to the phrase and in words surrounding those links and associated with them, and in how people might use the page in a way that is associated with a specific query term or phrase such as clicking on a link to the page when it appears in search results for a specific search for a specific term or phrase, or spending a certain amount of time on that page after a search brings them to it. These kinds of signals for ranking a page are often referred to by search engines as query dependant signals because they do rely upon a specific query used to find a page.

Mixing Signals and Reordering Page Rankings

A search engine can use a mix of a good number of signals to determine in which order it might show pages to searchers in response to a search. It might also take those ordered results and reorder them before presenting them to searchers based upon other factors involving those pages, such as which country the searcher might be from, which language they have indicated they prefer to see results in, and many others.

Bank failures: 13 in 2009

Four banks folded Friday, bringing the total number of banks to fail this year to 13.

Deposits at Sherman County Bank, based in Loup City, Neb., the first bank in the state to fail since 1990, will be taken over by Heritage Bank, based in Wood River, Neb., according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Meanwhile, accounts held by Riverside Bank of the Gulf Coast based in Cape Coral, Fla., will be assumed by TIB Bank based in Naples, Fla., the FDIC said. It is the second bank to fail in Florida this year and the fourth to go under in that state since the economic crisis unfurled.

Corn Belt Bank and Trust Company, based in Pittsfield, Ill., the third bank to fail in the state since January 2008, was also shuttered by state regulators, and its deposits were turned over to The Carlinville National Bank out of Carlinville, Ill.

Pinnacle Bank, Beaverton, Oregon, was closed by the Oregon Division of Finance and Corporate Securities. The FDIC entered into an agreement with Washington Trust Bank, Spokane, Washington, to assume all of the deposits of Pinnacle Bank.

Customers who banked with Sherman County Bank, Riverside, Corn Belt Bank, or Pinnacle Bank will automatically become customers of the new owners, and will retain their account protection under the FDIC, which insures single accounts up to $250,000, and joint accounts up to $500,000, the government agency said.

Due to the Presidents Day holiday on Monday, Sherman County Bank's four branches, Riverside's nine branches, and Corn Belt Bank's two, will reopen on Tuesday as branches of the new deposit holders, the agency said.

Yahoo posts net loss of $303 mn in Q4

Internet major Yahoo! has reported a net loss of USD 303 million in the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2008 on restructuring costs amid global downturn.
For the full year ended December 2008, Yahoo! posted a profit of USD 424 million against USD 660 million in the previous year, a company statement said in New York.
It added that the company during the quarter had incurred a restructuring cost of USD 108 million and "good will impairment" charge of USD 488 million among other costs.

Yahoo! had announced laying off about 1,500 employees in its efforts to save the company from the impact of the global downturn.
Yahoo! Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen said, "We are encouraged by our results for 2008. Yahoo!s aggressive cost management and strong balance sheet helped us navigate this unprecedented economic environment."

Govt set to make computers available @ Rs 500

New Delhi: To take knowledge to every household and help students get feed on every subject while sitting home, the Government is set to make available low-cost computers at USD 10 within six months.
Technology for these small devices has been developed by IISC, Bangalore and IIT Madras. "But lot of testing has to be done to ensure that the technology works properly. Once the testing is over, the computers will be made available on commercial basis. The target is to make it available in six months time," Higher Education Secretary, Ministry of HRD, R P Agrawal said reporters in New Delhi on Thursday.
The computer will be a small equipment with expandable memory, LAN and Wi-Fi facilities. The government will also produce e-content on every subject which will be made available free of cost.
A prototype computer has been designed which is being tested now. "Its cost will be USD 10. If the parents want to gift something to their kids, they can easily purchase this item and gift them," he said.

Students can get the e-content feed and load them in their computers and take advantage of the materials. The government will provide these computers to educational institutions at a subsidised price, Agrawal said.
The government is in the process of consultation with different agencies for production of these computers and are seeking collaboration with them. These computers can run at two WT power. "The ultimate target is to have a Virtual Technological University," Agrawal said.
The low-cost computers are being developed under the central scheme -- National Mission on Education through Information Communication Technology (ICT).
The ICT scheme envisages providing broadband connectivity to about 20,000 institutions, including 100 central educational institutions, in the country.
Institutions run by state governments and private agencies will have to bear 25 per cent of the cost for the broadband connectivity.
There are about 15,000 institutions in the country which do not have any connectivity and they will get five MBPS connectivity, Agrawal said. "The purpose is that the scheme will bridge the digital divide between institutions," he said.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has already approved the scheme which aims to use ICT in providing personalised and interactive knowledge modules to students, a step aimed at increasing enrollment rate by five per cent in higher education in the 11th Plan.
The scheme would cost Rs 4,612 crore in the 11th Plan. "About 40 per cent of the fund will be spent on developing e-content. The e-content will be provided free to the institutions and students,"
